Picking the AFC North – How the Experts have Fared in 2013

If you weren’t aware, Pickwatch is currently expanding to give you more in-depth help with your picks, by showing you who has the best hit percentage for each team, both at home and on the road. Now that this information is ready for the AFC teams, I’ll be rolling it out in a series of blog posts. I’ll also link to these posts in a tab at the top of the page (‘AFC North’ will – in a fit of inspiration – be the title for this one), and it will be updated weekly. ON WITH THE PICKS!

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals have been maddeningly inconsistent, as evidence by last night’s weak effort against a Miami team that had been travelling in the opposite direction. That makes Yahoo Sports’ Frank Schwab’s 90% success rate this season even more impressive, given that over half of NFL experts have a hit percentage of less than 50%.

Home (4-0): 9 experts have 100% home records. Of these, only Schwab and ProFootballFocus’s Khaled Elsayed have over 75% home and away. Mike Freeman of Bleacher Report is yet to pick a Bengals home game correctly. 5th time lucky, eh Mike?

Road (2-3):  No Experts have 100%, however Schwab, Elsayed, FOX’s Adam Meyer and (strangely) NFL Network’s Sterling Sharpe all have 80%.

Cleveland Browns

If, like me, you misguidedly assumed that 25 years of extraordinarily bad football in Cleveland were due to end this year, then you were… well actually you were about half-way right. Browns fans had some respite under Brian Hoyer before a torn ACL cost him the year, while their defence has been stubborn despite having little help from the offence. All that makes them a picker’s nightmare, particularly given how close they have come to upsetting better teams such as Kansas City and Baltimore on the road

Home (2-2): A glut of experts are on 75% overall, including PFT’s Michael David Smith, Sterling Sharpe (again) and Around the League’s Gregg Rosenthal. The ‘fan picks’ of NFL.com, Yahoo.com and ESPN.com also fare well in home picks for the Browns.

Road (1-3):  ProFootballFocus.com’s Gordon McGuinness – 3rd from last in the overall standings – is 100% picking the Browns on the road, while Chris Hansen of Bleacher Report is also 100%, he has a 25% record picking them at home.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens sum up the AFC North really: Super Bowl champs last year, they now have a losing record and you could make a case for them either winning or losing every game they’ve played so far. Indeed, our experts really seem to have a soft spot for the Ravens, who generally garner support even against the toughest of opposition. Must be a Harbaugh thing.

Home (2-1): Our experts are led by Mike Golic of ESPN, FOX’s Joell Beall, and Matt ‘Money’ Smith of NFL Fantasy Live. All three have 88% overall picking the Ravens and 100% picking them at home.
Road (1-3):  On the road, Baltimore are a mixed bag and the experts have struggled with them accordingly. Just 16% of the analysts Pickwatch tracks have a record better than .500 when picking the Ravens, and again, Golic, Beall and Smith lead the way as the only experts over 50% both at home and on the road.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Like the Ravens, our experts have a soft spot for the Steelers, and some people have resolutely picked them even when faced with overwhelming evidence that the Steelers of 2013 are a far cry from the Super Bowl winners of six years ago. I know the feeling. I play in a fantasy football dynasty league with ridiculous depth, and only now, after 8 years as my pride and joy, have I dropped the Steelers Defence. It truly feels like the end of an era, a bit like when the Simpsons went crap around series 10. Essentially, the Steelers have jumped the shark.

Home (1-2): Mike Ditka eh? I know what you’re thinking ‘who’d have thought serial crotch-grabber (his own crotch!) ESPN’s Mike Ditka would have an 88% record and be the best expert to keep an eye on when I’m picking Steelers games?’

Well hold on there sonny… because the COIN TOSS IS SECOND! yes, emphasising the complete lottery that is the new brand of ‘Steelers football’, the 50-50 random chance of blind luck would actually appear to be better than NINETY-ONE of our experts in picking the Steelers…

Road (1-3):  And yes, that means that the coin toss (along with Rich Eisen podcast alum Chris Law) is 100% in picking the Steelers on the road. What’s that? No big deal? Well less than 20% of experts have a winning record when picking the Steelers on the road this year, so whether you choose to follow Law or the coin toss, you can do so with confidence…
